Hodgkin’s lymphoma, formerly known as Hodgkin’s Disease, is a type of lymphoma—a cancer that originates in the white blood cells, or lymphocytes. You may have also heard of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, another common cancer of the lymphatic system. (The other type, non-Hodgkin’s, is far more common.)

If a person has Hodgkin’s lymphoma, cells in their lymphatic system grow abnormally and may also spread beyond the lymphatic system. As Hodgkin’s lymphoma progresses, it compromises your body’s ability to fight infection.

Hodgkin’s lymphoma was once considered fatal, but advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of the cancer have created a lot of hope. Although every situation is unique, Hodgkin’s lymphoma is now considered highly treatable and many patients have the potential for making a full recovery.

Common Symptoms of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

The Mayo Clinic offers a list of common warning signs and symptoms of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. They may include some of the following:

Painless swelling of lymph nodes in your neck, armpits or groin
Persistent fatigue
Fever and chills
Night sweats
Unexplained weight loss — as much as 10 percent or more of your body weight
Coughing, trouble breathing or chest pain
Loss of appetite
Itching
Increased sensitivity to the effects of alcohol or pain in your lymph nodes after drinking alcohol

These symptoms may be caused by a variety of other medical conditions, but it important to see your see your doctor if you begin to notice changes in your body. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a type of cancer that can strike at any age. Some of the initial warning signs of the disease are often larger than normal lymph nodes, fever, and weight loss. There are several different types of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas can be divided into aggressive (or fast-growing) types or indolent (or slow-growing) types. They can be formed from either B-cells or T-cells. B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas include Burkitt lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, immunoblastic large cell lymphoma, precursor B-lymphoblastic lymphoma, and mantle cell lymphoma. T-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas include mycosis fungoides, anaplastic large cell lymphoma, and precursor T-lymphoblastic lymphoma. Lymphomas that occur after bone marrow or stem cell transplantation are usually B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas.

This scientific explanation does little to comfort those living with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or their family, friends, and caregivers. Although prognosis and treatment depend on the stage and type of disease, it’s been estimated that there will be 65,540 new cases of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosed and 20,210 will be deaths caused by the cancer in the United States in 2010.

Lymphoma Awareness Basics

Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, affects the lymphatic system, the network of vessels and nodes that carry white blood cells. Lymphoma begins when white blood cells called lymphocytes — which are supposed to help protect the body from infection and disease — begin behaving abnormally. Abnormal lymphocytes may divide faster than normal cells or live longer than they are supposed to.

Lymphoma can develop in various areas of the body, and it often begins in the lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, blood, or other organs. There are two main types of lymphoma: Hodgkin’s lymphoma and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In both types of the cancer, the lymphatic cells begin to grow abnormally, causing the lymph nodes to become larger than usual.

In most cases, Hodgkin’s lymphoma follows a more predictable pattern than non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and it often has a more limited spread, while non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas are more likely to involve many different areas of the body.

Some lymphomas have high cure rates and others can be managed effectively for many years, which is one important thing to keep in mind if you or someone you love has been diagnosed with this form of cancer.

We are Awareness Gift Boutique and are pleased to bring you a blog created especially to promote awareness for lymphoma including the 2 main types of lymphoma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Hodgkin’s lymphoma formerly called Hodgkin’s disease. As cancer survivors, survivor spouses, and avid awareness advocates we are pleased to use this blog to deliver useful information and news regarding lymphoma as well as spotlight some of our exclusive lymphoma awareness designs available on a variety of t-shirts, apparel, and gifts through our awareness shop.

Having been personally affected by cancer and other life-threatening diseases, our efforts to promote and advocate awareness go beyond the sale of a t-shirt. In addition to multiple free services offered by Awareness Gift Boutique to inform and educate the public, we are regular contributors to numerous medical research charities as well as animal shelters and Save Darfur efforts.
